My First CD
I’ve just been looking through some of my music and came across the first CD I ever bought.
When they first came out, we were told that they had crystal clear sound. and were pretty much indestructible.
It was in the week running up to Easter 1987 that I bought my first CD player. I’d been dithering over buying one and, against my better judgement, bought one, hoping that I hadn’t wasted a fortune at the time.
The very first CD I bought was a CD single of a Lionel Richie song, “Se La.”
The reason I bought it was that it was only £1.25. I wanted to see how indestructible it was.
So I got home, stopped the car. put the CD on the floor in front of the driver’s side wheel (in its plastic carrier bag), got back into the car, drove over it and then reversed back over it.
I expected it to be smashed to pieces, and if not, to be scratched to pieces and unplayable.
I have to say, I couldn’t believe it when it played perfectly.
The next time I was in town, I bought my first CD album, Dire Straits ‘Brothers In Arms’.
I’ve still got both. It’s hard to believe that was 39 years ago!
And did you run each one over subsequently??
Seriously though, CDs have turned out to be decently hard to make unplayable and yours of 1987 is nearly 40 years old....not bad for something that flimsy looking. Still got a long way to go to beat the age of 78rpm records though. They started heavy manufacturing of them in about 1890 and I have a couple in my collection nearly that old 130 years! Mind you, strength is not their strong point......driving over a shellac record would have exactly the effect you expect!!
